In 1800 William Blake and his wife rented a cottage at Felpham, Sussex, staying there for 3 years. In a letter he wrote: "Meat is cheaper than in London, but the sweet air and the voices of winds, trees and birds and the odours of the happy ground, makes it a dwelling for the immortals." Their rustic idyll ended following a contretemps when Blake came upon a soldier cutting the grass in his garden. He hated soldiers and warfare. His oaths landed him in the law courts. I have depicted them here being cast out, Adam and Eve style (the Blakes were fond of stripping off in their garden) from their earthly Sussex paradise.
